Strategic Outcomes and Strategies

Strategic Outcomes (need a minimum of 3)
Strategic outcomes are the key results or impacts that must be achieved in order to maintain a viable organization in the current and anticipated IPE

  • Media Center instills in students a desire to become life-long learners. GJ 1 CF4 LB 3 KM3 DW3
  • Students utilize current technology to acquire, create and evaluate information. GJ 2 CF3 LB2 KM4 DW1 (GJ note: with some edits in the DB that I am ok with)
  • The Media Center improves the quality of life of school and community providing access to technology,
new ideas and information for all users. GJ 3 CF1 LB1 KM1 SH3 (although Silvia voted on the original worded one) GJ note: DW does not like this one
  • Materials in the media center meet the ever-changing needs of the students and faculty. GJ 4 CF2 LB4 KM2 SH1 (although Silvia voted on the original worded one)
  • Collection development in the school library media center reflects the diversity and changing needs of the students and faculty. DW2

Strategy Areas (no more than 5)

Strategy Area: Funding GJ 1 KM5 CF 1, SH1
Statement : We will work to increase funding through dialog with district school board members, applying for state & federal grants, and through student community projects that will also serve to increase program awareness. [note from GJ: I like this one because we need more money to do all that we want to do, but someone has to be willing to write an AP on this one OR most APLs will need to include a funding section in their plans outlining how they will get funding for their plans]

DW edits~ I agree with Giselle, funding is a major need for a school in an area where most community members fall below the poverty line. Also, inevitable two of our strategies cannot be fulfilled without more money. I do think adding library hours can be combined with funding and help to create a more dynamic AP. If we specify what we need the money for, we are creating a more active statement and paving the way for an AP. By the definition presented in Dr. Mardis’s class, technology and print sources all fall under collection development, so I did not make a distinction here.
Statement: We will work to increase funding for collection development and increasing library operation hours through promotion, state & federal grants, and student community projects.

Strategy Area: Collection development GJ 2 KM3 SH2
Statement : We will increase the size and improve the currency of the collection in order to promote cultural diversity (note from GJ: special needs can fit in here) and provide students with more opportunities to appreciate, cross-reference and evaluate information sources that are not only diverse, but also current.

DW edits~I reviewed the group’s strategies that related to collection development and added “quality” and “reading appreciation” as stated by Lynne and myself. Also, it is redundant to say, “increase the size and improve the currency” at the beginning of the sentence then following it with “information sources that are not only diverse, but also current” as the closing. I have included all topics we have discussed related to collection development. I believe this is a primary strategy because we need to build our resources before we can move ahead with all of our curriculum changes. Here is my revision.

Statement:We will increase and update our collection with a focus on quality, currency, student interest, diversity, special needs, and professional resources to enhance recreational reading appreciation, better meet our community needs, and provide opportunities for print research skills within our facility.CF 2

Strategy Area: Technology GJ 3
Statement: We will increase the use and knowledge of technology in our school community by using funding to purchase computers and by utilizing free, educational Web 2.0 applications.

DW edits~Giselle had posted my original technology strategy, however I edited it and added some points made by Cathy F. in her technology strategy. Again, this is an important strategy because we are trying to meet the needs of all students, especially by updating the facility to 21st Century tech standards.

Statement: We will increase the use and knowledge of technology in our school community by using funding to purchase computers and assistive technology for special needs users, by utilizing free, educational Web 2.0 applications, and by providing training to decrease the digital divide in our community. CF 3

Strategy Area: Curriculum GJ 4 KM3
Statement: We will promote life-long learning by teaching information literacy and instilling the desire to continue learning by making information literacy fun.

Strategy Area: Collaboration GJ 5 KM1 SH5 (although Silvia originally voted on motivation)
Statement: We will collaborate with faculty and students to increase learning motivation by promoting activities in the media center (e.g., chess , debate club meetings, weekly journalism tv shows, blogs and tutoring sessions) and by providing resources that support lesson plans.

DW edits~I believe these two can be combined into one strategy that can be worked into an action plan. This is an important strategy because it is at the heart of our ultimate goal of providing a better education for students.
Statement- We will offer collaboration opportunities in reading instruction, information literacy instruction, and enrichment activities and projects, working with grade level and content area teachers as well as students, to promote motivation and life-long learning CF 4

Strategy Area: Public Relations GJ 6
Statement:
We will promote the media center by increasing public awareness of media center programs by leveraging our relationships with the local media for non-paid publicity and promoting the media center at community meetings and other social gatherings.

Strategy Area: Marketing SH3
Statement : We will promote the media center to increase community use for recreational reading, research, and as a community center [note from GJ: I am not sure about this one as we first need to build our collection & technology for our students before we reach out the community]

DW edits~I believe these two statements can be combined to form an overall strategy and ap that focuses on “getting the word out there.” This is important to any effort at changing a current program or becoming more involved with the student community, especially when funds are needed.
Statement: We will promote the media center, utilizing local, non-paid media publicity, community meetings, and networking opportunities with school district representatives in order to increase public awareness and generate support and funds.

Strategy Area: Quality of Life KM4 CF5
Statement: We will improve the quality of life for our students, staff and community by providing the ideas, resources and technology needed to become successful citizens. Cathy's thought: are we providing ideas? or access to ideas? This goes along with the mission and is do-able but sounds like it needs more "wordsmithing".

Strategy Area: Administration SH4
Statement : We will work with administration, the school library media specialist, and paraprofessionals to adjust library operating hours, making services available after regular school hours.

Strategy Area: Information
Statement:
